NCI has a new data science leader as of June 30, 2024! Meet Dr. Warren Kibbe. He’s bringing a wealth of experience to a brand new position at NCI—with the goal of advancing the use of data and data science in cancer research and care.

Dr. Jill Barnholtz-Sloan is CBIIT’s new acting director following Dr. Tony Kerlavage’s retirement last week. In addition to this role, Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan maintains her responsibility as associate director for the Informatics and Data Science Program and senior investigator in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, Trans-Divisional Research Program.

In the latest episode of the Center for Cancer Genomics (CCG) podcast, “Personal Genomics,” CCG honors the work and legacy of Dr. Daniela S. Gerhard. Dr. Gerhard was a program director and passionate open data advocate who spent nearly two decades developing large-scale genomics and translational research programs at NCI.

In a recent podcast, NCI leaders from CBIIT and the Small Business Innovation Research Development Center shared how technological developments have enhanced cancer research and have helped usher in new diagnostics, treatments, and patient care.

CBIIT Director, Dr. Tony Kerlavage, along with NCI staff and a host of experts in childhood cancer research, recently published an article, “Cancer Informatics for Cancer Centers (CI4CC): Scientific Drivers for Informatics, Data Science, and Care in Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer,” in JCO Cancer Clinical Informatics. The article summarizes the Fall 2020 CI4CC Symposium and showcases the scope of initiatives underway to address childhood cancer, with a particular emphasis on how data science and informatics are helping to support these initiatives.

Dr. Jill Barnholtz-Sloan will join CBIIT as the new associate director for Informatics and Data Science, overseeing a broad range of programs and initiatives related to data science. She will bring a unique perspective to her work at CBIIT, blending experience as a cancer researcher with skills in leading and implementing complex data management systems.

In 1971, the National Cancer Act was signed into law, creating NCI. Now, 50 years later, NCI celebrates the progress that has been made and the promise of what’s to come.

CBIIT Director Dr. Tony Kerlavage participated in the National Cancer Policy Forum's workshop "Applying Big Data to Address the Social Determinants of Health in Oncology." The proceedings, which were recently published, illustrate how Dr. Kerlavage and other leading experts are working to identify novel ways to collect, curate, analyze, and use social determinants of health (SDOH) data to address health disparities related to cancer research and outcomes.
