Dr. Jill Barnholtz-Sloan To Join the CBIIT Leadership Team as Associate Director for Informatics and Data Science
On May 23, Dr. Jill Barnholtz-Sloan will join CBIIT as the new associate director for Informatics and Data Science, overseeing and supporting a broad range of programs and initiatives related to data science. In particular, she will oversee the work of CBIIT’s Clinical and Translational Research Informatics Branch, the Data Ecosystems Branch, and the Computational Genomics and Bioinformatics Branch.
She also will serve as an intramural NCI researcher in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, Trans-Divisional Research Program, where she will continue to pursue a robust research agenda in descriptive epidemiology and etiology of brain tumors.
She is coming to NCI from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Health System, where Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan has been responsible for leading multiple endeavors related to data science. She’s successfully navigated issues related to data access, security, and privacy, and she’s implemented measures to make it easier for researchers to use data in ways that yield meaningful results.
In addition, as a principal investigator with an active research portfolio, Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan understands the importance of data science in cancer research. She notes that, “Integrating all levels of data (clinical, DNA, RNA, proteins, imaging, etc.) has allowed for critical discoveries that have changed the way we diagnose and treat cancer.”
“CBIIT is renowned for being at the forefront of making data publicly available and for providing the tools that can help interrogate those data. I’m looking forward to supporting CBIIT and the broader NCI and finding new ways of ensuring these rich data resources are available to investigators around the world,” she added.
