Apply by April 9 to Be an NIH DATA Scholar

The NIH Office of Data Science Strategy is once again accepting applications for the Data and Technology Advancement (DATA) National Service Scholar Program (DATA Scholars). This is an excellent opportunity for experienced data and computer scientists and engineers to tackle biomedical data challenges with the potential for substantial public health impact.

The 1- to 2-year position will begin remotely but may transition onsite at a later date. Applicants should be prepared to relocate to one of the NIH institutes, centers, or the Office of the Director, located in Bethesda and Rockville, MD, or Research Triangle Park, NC.

DATA Scholars will:

  • lead transformative NIH projects that leverage large data sets to advance knowledge in high-impact areas of biomedical research.
  • directly communicate technical and project-related information with NIH senior leadership.
  • collaborate with other DATA Scholars and the NIH data science community across broad disciplinary boundaries.
  • engage with policymakers, top researchers, and industry partners.

As part of this program, NCI is specifically seeking an artificial intelligence (AI) operational engineer to develop a framework for deploying and integrating machine learning (ML) algorithms into the workflow of NCI’s cancer registries. The scholar will work with the NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer surveillance infrastructure and oversee the deployment and integration of ML algorithms in this infrastructure. They will also disseminate algorithms to the larger cancer surveillance community and other federal agencies.

Applicants should possess technical skills in areas such as AI, cloud computing, data engineering, data science, database management, project management, software design, supercomputing, and/or bioinformatics. Industry experience is desired. Applicants should have an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree and have advanced experience in data science or related fields.

Applications are due April 9, 2021.
