NIH Seeks Promising New Investigators—Apply for the Early Independence Award

Your work with data and technology matters! In 2023, people just like you received funding from the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award for their work in data science and related fields. Those awards are helping to fund:

  • advances in data science,
  • innovative analytics, and
  • pioneering multi-omics and machine learning.

Now’s your chance to apply!

If you’re a new investigator longing to step out into your own independent research career, you can skip your postdoc and get right to work because this award allows up to $250,000 per year for up to 5 years.

Visit the NIH Common Fund website for more details on the award, and submit your application by September 6, 2024.

You’ll need to meet the following criteria to qualify:

  • You have completed or will complete your doctoral degree or clinical training between May 1, 2023, and September 30, 2025.
  • You have a non-independent research position (i.e., no assigned research space, with funding through others, and you’re unable to apply for an NIH 501 without special permission. You also can’t have served as a postdoc for more than 12 months prior to your terminal research degree.)
  • You must apply from a U.S.-based institution (only two applicants per institution).

You’ll be graded on:

  • your qualities and readiness for independence.
  • the innovativeness and potential impact of your approach.
  • your host institution’s commitment to you and your work.
