Non-NIH Funded Investigators Submitting Genomic Data

Non-NIH funded investigators who wish to submit genomic data to NIH and NCI repositories should follow the instructions below.

1. Submit key documents

Submit the following documents to the NCI Office of Data Sharing.

2. Await review

NCI Office of Data Sharing staff will review documents for completeness and contact you if additional information/clarification is required. Studies with large storage amounts may incur a storage fee.

Documents will be sent to an internal NCI Committee to review and determine whether NCI will accept and support the non-NIH funded study for data deposition. The process may take up to two weeks to obtain a decision. If the committee decides the data are eligible for an appropriate NCI repository, the NCI Office of Data Sharing staff will inform the investigator and appropriate Grants Professional Associate who will complete dbGaP registration.

3. Quality check data submission

Perform appropriate quality assurance/quality control checks on the data and metadata.

4. Upload full data and metadata submission

Upload data and metadata files to the dbGaP Submission Portal following the invitation to the Principle Investigator assistant/submitter. To obtain a phs accession number, you must include the:

  • Study configuration file
  • Subject/sample mapping file

NIH Repositories Data Set Release Expectations

dbGaP/NCI-approved repositories will release the data as quickly as possible following completion of upload. This process can take up to eight weeks.
