Dr. George Komatsoulis, CBIIT Deputy Director, Leaving the NCI

To the Cancer Informatics Community,

As you may know, Dr. George Komatsoulis, Deputy Director of the NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT), will be leaving the NCI on May 2, 2014 to join the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine, where he will be focusing on Big Data and Precision Medicine. This is a great opportunity for the NCBI to benefit from George experience in putting together the NCI Cloud Computing strategy.

George has been a longtime member of the NCI, and during his tenure at the NCI has worked closely with the community, the NCI leadership, the NCI Board of Scientific Advisors and was instrumental in the creation and launch of the NCI National Cancer Informatics Program (NCIP). George was critical to the refocusing the NCI biomedical informatics program. On a more personal note, George has eased my transition into the NCI. I have benefitted immensely from his guidance, integrity, professionalism, dedication, and experience. It has been a pleasure working beside George for the last six months and I will miss his presence and unique perspective and sense of humor.

As we open a national search to seek a new deputy director for the NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology, it is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Juli Klemm has accepted by request to serve as the acting deputy director. Many of you may be well acquainted with Juli, who has worked with cancer informatics community as part of the NCI since 2007. As part of her role as the deputy director, she will be helping solidify our community outreach and cancer informatics facilitation plans. Prior to joining the NCI, she received her Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She was also a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University.

I hope you will join me in extending congratulations to George on his new position at NCBI and welcoming Juli to her new role at the NCI.

Thank you,

Warren
